Every year since 1998, each Canada Safeway store across the country has selected a community organization to support as part of its "Because We Care" fundraising program. Working in partnership with the chosen organization, Safeway employees endeavor to raise money for the charity through various fundraising activities.
Since the inception of the Because We Care program, Safeway's nearly 28,500 Canadian employees and millions of customers have together raised more than $20 million. That money has been used to enhance programs and services across the country in areas of community importance. The Foundation was honoured to be chosen by the Canada Safeway location at Leila and McPhillips as its designated charity for this year's campaign.
The location raised money for the Foundation primarily through the sale of Safeway coupon books and a designated "Charity Checkout Day". On that day, all Safeway customers who went through a till were asked if they would like to "top-up" their bill and thus make a donation to the designated charity for that location. Throughout the month of February, Safeway offered "Show Your Heart" coupon books filled with money-saving coupons worth up to $75.00 in Safeway products for only $2.00.
When this year's campaign wrapped up, the location had surpassed its original target of $3,000 and raised $3,716 for the Foundation. All of the proceeds will go directly to the Emergency Relief campaign.
The Foundation thanks all of the Canada Safeway employees and community members who took part in this year's Because We Care campaign.
